Dedor Awards – 2008 Edition

Posted By Richard on January 5, 2009

I think I’m going to start a tradition here… my own year in review culminating with my own “Person of the Year”. Especially since I wasn’t chosen this year! Maybe this is the year!

The year 2008 was a great one for a lot of people and a troubled one for most everyone. The rich didn’t get richer, that’s for sure. For me, I took my first real vacation in two years, I started writing my book and I gave my first keynote speech. How cool is that?!

Without further pomp and circumstance, here is my 2008 – Year in Review.

Book of the Year (that I read):

The best book I read in 2008 is a touch choice. The two that weren’t selected, but that I recommend are Honeymoon with my Brother (by Franz Winser) and man and boy (by Tony Parsons). The books I spent my time reading this year were both entertaining and developmental on a person and professional level. I can only hope my reading list in 2009 is just as good. But my award for Book of the Year goes to Riding with the Blue Moth (by Bill Hancock). This book had been on my list for two years and I’m glad I finally was able to read it. It’s an emotional ride from a father who lost his son. For those how think this is an over told story, this one is true and it results in a cross-country bike ride. A must read… if you have tissues nearby, that is.

Best Sports Moment:

As a sports nut, there are a lot of moments to gleam from 2008. We had the Olympics, a great baseball season, great tennis matches, and a great summer of soccer. I am tempted to give the award to the Nadal/Federer Wimbledon final, but it close voting (it’s only me!) I must give the award to Matthew Mitcham.

He is the Australian diver who won gold in the 10m platform in the Beijing Olympics. What was amazing about this was that Mitcham became the only person to win gold in a diving event that wasn’t a member of the Chinese squad. To win gold, he received the highest score in a 10m dive… ever! Even grander than that… Mitcham is openly gay.

Artist of the Year:

For me, this is easy: Coldplay. I will be writing a review of their album in a few weeks, so stay tuned for that, but Viva la Vida is amazing…

Person of the Year:

I will follow Time Magazine’s lead on this one and select Barack Obama, our President-elect as my person of the year. Not much is needed to be said about this selection. It could be the voters, it could be Palin, but it is Obama, hands down.

Well, there you have it. The innagural Dedor Awards. Well… not quite, but more will come out about past awards soon!
