Silence is Golden

I grew up a huge football fan … but I was (and am) a fan of the Denver Broncos. Growing up in the 90s, the team wasn’t kind to us. Good year and bad years and always coming up short.

But that changed in 1998 when the Broncos earned the trip to Super Bowl XXXII in San Diego. But they were going up against the vaunted Green Bay Packers. They did not have a chance to win. For the two weeks leading up to the game, the media and the players all kept saying how good the Packers were and how badly they were going to beat my Broncos.

And I started to believe them.

But the Broncos had other plans. They knew the truth. They knew how strong their team was. And history shows the team with the smallest offensive line (by weight) in the league dominated one of the largest defensive lines (by weight) won that game. After one of the loudest talkers in the NFL won Super Bowl XXXII, he told a reporter, "Silence is golden." Shannon Sharpe was right. And it is the right way to lead as well.

Be quiet. Listen. And just do the work to lead.
